Love it or hate it, Facebook is a must when working in film & TV
"Why is she saying this?" I hear you cry. Well, let me explain...
I have been out of the industry for almost 6 years. I've tried every 'normal' 9-5 there is going but the industry has always had a piece of my heart.
I've been umming and aahing for a while about dipping my toe back in, but I've always decided against it, until I was mindlessly scrolling through Facebook, as you do, and came across a post from a friend of mine I worked with on Downton Abbey- I was his runner, he was my 3rd. He's now a 1st AD for the BBC.
He was looking for a 3rd AD for a couple of dailies. Unfortunately the dates didn't work out for me but I commented on his post to say if anything else came up, to give me a shout. I was disappointed that I couldn't do it, and went back to my mindless scroll.
Within an hour, my phone pinged. A text from a 2nd AD I'd worked with years ago had seen my comment on his post and she needed a 3rd for a few days down in Kent. Now I don't know why my brain works like this, but I was immediately going to say no. Why? I was available for the dates and I'd posted on FB that I wanted back in. Surely this was mean to be?!
After I gave myself a good talking to, I accepted the job, and spent an awesome 4 days on a farm in Kent filming a drama for ITV.
So moral of the story is- if you work in film, or want to work in film- get yourself on Facebook! It's free and a great way to keep in touch with crew you'd otherwise forget about- or worse still, they'll forget about you!
